Craft Town Scotland
Craft Town Scotland is an innovative local project which aims to bring together arts and crafts producers, promoting crafts at grass-roots level and embedding makers in the daily life of West Kilbride’s community.
It supports makers of all disciplines at all levels by promoting the work of skilled ‘amateurs’ with the same care and respect as the work of our most innovative practitioners. The project has created a focus for craft and design by providing affordable studio accommodation for professional makers which are open to the public and, by exploiting niche retailing and tourism, encouraged new businesses and increased visitors to the town.
Craft Town Scotland currently have eight craft studios, each one an intimate workshop where craft work is produced by a single maker. Raw materials are transformed, each piece of work is designed and then made on the premises. This is labour intensive, highly skilled work that requires concentration and focus – whilst work is available for sale, the studios are not purely retail outlets.
Craft makers may have to visit commissioning clients, attend exhibitions, craft fairs, international selling events, or be called away at short notice. Generally studios are all open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (although some open over and above these times). Full contact details can be found on each craft maker’s dedicated pages on the Craft Town Scotland website.
